What is the difference between the original X-18 and the new X-18R?
Answer: The X-18R is the revived version of the original X-18 iron set. The R is referring to “Retro”. The X-18 iron set has been selling very well, and Callaway Golf has decided to revive this set for 2009 with a lower price point. X-18 series irons has been known for their patent in the undercut channel. This process was very costly to make. The undercut channel is the gap you would find between the face of the club and the muscle in the cavity back area. This allow the center of gravity to move further to the back, creating larger sweet spot, thus more forgiveness, easiness of use, and better accuracy. The original X-18 iron set has a 360 degree undercut channel throughout the cavity back area (including the top part of the head). This is unnecessary because not many people will hit the golf balls that high on the face. Most people will hit around the bottom (near sole) and also middle of the face. Thus the X-18R was born. It has the undercut channel at the area where most hits will occur. The upper part of the club head does not have this undercut channel. However, it is still has the perimeter weighting for forgiveness and larger sweet spot.
